Client: Paste Magazine
Paste Magazine covers popular music and culture for a large general readership; now online, it previously also maintained print editions and a CD sampler. After seeing the Smoke Fairies play one of their first U.S. shows, I saw potential for the English band to reach a larger audience, and felt certain they would appeal to Paste’s readers.
Once Paste granted me the assignment, I arranged a meeting with the band in London. I interviewed them in their favorite pub, a setting that encouraged the musicians to open up about their roots and daily lives. I then transcribed and edited the interview and sent it to my editor. Throughout, I maintained professional communication with the magazine, the musicians and their management.
With my article, Paste covered the Smoke Fairies ahead of many of its competitors, and with a depth and involvement that will be difficult for other publications to match.
